School cross country
After a false start due to wet weather, our P-6 cross country carnival on 27th May was a huge success. With strong attendance from families and participation from all students P-6, the annual cross country carnival is an exciting, fun and tiring afternoon of racing! Thanks to all the families who attended, stayed for afternoon tea and supported their child.

Zone cross country
Congratulations to our school cross country team who competed at the zone carnival recently at Greystanes Sports Ground. All students represented Yates with pride and passion, running hard and trying their best on a cold, wet and windy day.
It was a tough day of racing with approx. 80 runners in each race, and a rugged, hilly course to navigate. Congratulations to Zak Jasper who finished 2nd in the 8-9 years and Ian Lee who finished 3rd in the 11 years race. Both boys qualified for the Sydney West carnival on Thursday, 26th June at Sydney International Equestrian Centre. We wish them all the best!

Multicultural public speaking competition
This term, our students in Years 3-6 have been delivering speeches in class on the topic of multiculturalism, with five students chosen from each stage to progress to the Stage 2 and 3 final in the school hall.
The quality of these speeches was outstanding and all speakers should be proud of their efforts. The following students were chosen to represent Yates at the district public speaking final on Monday, 16th June at Ngarala Public School, Epping:
- Stage 2 - Zac Jasper and Thomas Townsend
- Stage 3 - Ethan Ward and Luseane Sapoi
Year 6 student leadership day
Last week, Cumberland HS hosted a student leadership day for the primary schools in the Carlingford area. Coordinated by senior leaders at the high school, the students completed a range of activities focused on team building, commmunication and goal setting. Our students enjoyed the experience and learned new skills about school leadership and group dynamics.
Attendance
Education for your child is vitally important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.
At Yates, we work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of our students. When your child attends every day, literacy and numeracy skills improve, learning becomes easier and strong friendships with other children are maintained.
At times, children become sick and need to stay at home to recover. If your child is absent, it is important that all days are explained with a note, phone call or message to a teacher via Seesaw, so we can update our attendance records. The school will contact you if an absence remains unexplained after 2 days.
Below is some important information about the impact of non attendance on learning.

Attendance awards
Our assembly awards are designed to encourage consistent attendance over a 3-week period and the whole term, with 2 types of awards:
- Assembly - Week 3, 6 & 9 - selected students will receive a PBL award for 94+% attendance for that 3-week period, allowing for 1 day absent.
- 3 students chosen randomly from each class
- Friday, Week 10 - all eligible students will receive a Principal's attendance award for 98+% attendance for the whole term, allowing for 1 day absent.
- these awards will have the same status as regular Principal's awards.
We look forward to seeing further improvements in our attendance data from this initiative and observing the great learning and wellbeing gains that come from attending school every day!
Reminder - School Bytes
School Bytes is an online portal which provides flexibility for families to make payments and submit digital permission for school activities. The link for School Bytes is on our website.
We will be sending notes via School Bytes when permission and/or payment is needed, allowing the school to print less paper and families to quickly and easily provide permission and make a payment for an activity.
If you still require a hard-copy note for an activity, please contact the school office.
Change of contact details
If your contact details or emergency contacts change in any way, please email the school office as soon as possible at yatesave-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au. This allows us to contact you quickly in the event of an illness or injury to your child, or if a teacher needs to discuss your child's learning or wellbeing.
Have a great few weeks!
