ANZAC Day ceremony
Recently, we commemorated the ANZACs with a ceremony where the school captains spoke about the sacrifices made by many during World War 1. Our leaders highlighted the importance of ANZAC Day and the need to stop, reflect and acknowledge those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Thank you to Mrs Aghdam, Mrs Dyball, Ms Yu and Ms Garcia for their organisation, and our speakers, Ruben and Alexa - for ensuring the service was so memorable.

Mother's Day stall
Thank you to our wonderful mums who helped at the Mother's Day stall. The stall was very popular with the children and a great fundraising success for the P and C. It was great to see community involvement once again at Yates.
Mother's Day breakfast
We hope all our mums, grandmas, aunties and special ladies had a great Mother's Day. Thanks for making the morning a huge success! It was our biggest ever response to the breakfast, with over 170 people in attendance!
A huge thank you to Mrs Dyball for the many hours spent organising the breakfast, and to the teachers for cooking and serving a delicious feast!

Attendance
Education for your child is vitally important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.
At Yates, we work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of our students. When your child attends every day, literacy and numeracy skills improve, learning becomes easier and strong friendships with other children are maintained.
At times, children become sick and need to stay at home to recover. If your child is absent, it is important that all days are explained with a note, phone call or message to a teacher via Seesaw, so we can update our attendance records. The school will contact you if an absence remains unexplained after 2 days.
Below is some important information about the impact of non attendance on learning.

Change of contact details
If your contact details or emergency contacts change in any way, please email the school office as soon as possible at yatesave-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au. This allows us to contact you quickly in the event of an illness or injury to your child, or if a teacher needs to discuss your child's learning or wellbeing.
School Payments
This year we will not be invoicing parents for school or P & C contributions.
Instead, we are only asking for a payment for Term 1 gymnastics ($20), Term 2 dance ($20) and Term 3 athletics skills lessons ($20), all of which have been subsided through a school grant. These programs are being delivered by the Moving Bodies fitness company.
In addition, there will be a $25 cost for a Spelling Mastery workbook for students in Years 1-6.
This information was sent via School Bytes on 25th March.
We would greatly appreciate your support in paying for these activities. Where possible, please pay online through School Bytes using the ‘make a payment’ option on the website.
Have a great few weeks!

Student Representative Council (SRC)
The SRC representatives are working well together and are enjoying the opportunity to develop their leadership skills. They are a very dedicated group of students who look forward to meeting up every fortnight to discuss ways to improve our school and assist others in our community.
Our Term 2 fundraising activity will be a Beanies for Brain Cancer day. On Wednesday, 25th June, all students will be invited to wear a beanie (or another hat of their choice) and to bring a gold coin donation which will go towards brain cancer research. This is going to be a fun day and we’re looking forward to seeing everyone in their beanies.
Congratulations to 6MR who received the SRC Award at assembly this afternoon for the best lining up after lunch and recess. Well done on being on time, organised and ready to learn.
Last Wednesday we had the first meeting of our lunchtime Chess Club. It was great to see so many keen and eager students from Years 2 – 6 come along to learn more about chess and to play some games.
Our senior students enjoyed sharing their knowledge with the younger students and helping them to understand how to play chess better. We look forward to developing the chess playing skills of all the students through the acquisition of new strategies and tactics over the weeks to come.

It is wonderful to have so many enthusiastic borrowers visiting our library every week! There were a number of students this week who were recognised as being Reading Rockstars for borrowing ten or more books so far this year. This was a source of great excitement and there are bound to be more students achieving this milestone over the next couple of weeks.
Thank you to all of the parents who have placed orders through Book Club recently. The commission we have received as a result of your orders has enabled us to purchase some new books for our library. These books will be available for borrowing soon and we look forward to sharing them with the students.
Next Wednesday, 28th May is National Simultaneous Storytime. This annual event will involve more than one million students across Australia and New Zealand coming together at the same time to read a beautiful story called The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel.
We’re very much looking forward to hearing this story being read aloud and doing some activities in our classrooms afterwards.
On Wednesday, 7th May, a group of skilful mathematicians in Years 3 – 6 completed the first round of the Maths Explorer and Maths Olympiad challenges for 2025.
Maths Explorer (Years 3 and 4) and Maths Olympiad (Years 5 and 6) are programs that are offered to high performing mathematics students across Australia, and we are pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to the students at Yates this year.
The students all worked hard and used their problem-solving skills to find solutions to a range of tricky mathematical questions. All of the students put in their best effort and should be proud of their achievements.
